“A woman is like a tea bag; you can’t tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water” - said Eleanor Roosevelt, and irrefutably right she was. As 8th March 2017 passes, the world celebrated Women’s Day with the theme #BeBoldForChange. The spirit of womanhood and the apprehensions attached to every person part of this particular cult has gone through a whirlwind of change which can be best briefed by the image portrayed by none other than Hermione Granger, who taught girls to leave behind the dreams of being a delicate princess, to hold on and be a warrior instead.
The twenty first century booms with innumerable examples of women who have achieved par excellence in their chosen fields. As stereotypes are broken and intelligence blooms with the fragrance of passion, each new day dawns to see women rising to a life that she was never given a taste of before. Melinda Gates, Angela Merkel, Michelle Obama, Marry Barra and Indra Nooyi are stark examples of this emboldening revolution that the women of today are part of.
Educate, Empower and Engage
The world today is one in which there are more women consumers of technology than producers. It is gripped by a serious lack of women pursuing studies in STEAM fields and working in related careers. The question that arises here is why there is a need for women in tech! In the perspective of technology, the most pressing requirement would be the need for diversity in the field. There are proven results from extensive research that diversity can improve problem solving, innovation and productivity in an organisation. From the perspective of the people, the women; technology, STEAM education and related careers are strong platforms with which the importunate issues of gender divide, unequal pay, unequal career opportunities etc. can be tackled in a much effective manner.
The process of empowering mankind can take flight with closing the gender gap in access to quality education. Adding more value to the knowledge gained from books is the knowledge gained from experiences. And the girls of today, stand on the same grounds as the rest to take the torch and lead their families, communities and their nation to the zenith of success.
One such opportunity had presented itself to Junkbot, when the team visited a girls school. The team was initially met by a group of girls who were totally abhorrent to the realm of technology and science. The challenge of explaining science to girls was met with a little apprehension, but the sheer excitement of triggering innovation through simple things like making robots out of worn out shoes and used shoe boxes made them look at STEAM as something of interest. So, as we here at Junkbot believe, it’s all about giving girls the power, the atmosphere and the tools to invent. It’s all about giving them support to fuel forward all their strength for harnessing the power of technology to open new doors, ignite new opportunities and transform lives
